Spice Coast Marathon

It all started with planning our marathon calendar. As two people in desperate need of improving their fitness, we started searching for upcoming marathons, and that is how we zeroed on our next marathon- the spicy, spice coast marathon.

After a series of snoozed alarms, we woke up to ride on our borrowed bike to reach the venue. The climate was bordering between pleasantness and cold. As we zipped through the lone road on Wellington island with backwaters and trees guarding us on both sides, we could not see a single soul with the familiar white color spice coast T-shirt. As we reached near the stage, we heard blade runner Major (retd.) D.P. Singh sharing his experience. Assumed dead after the kargil war, he made a come back we rarely hear of. His positive outlook was evident from the following statement he made- maybe god had other plans for me. He believed god will help him in exceeding beyond his own expectations. His incredible zeal and the loud roar of 'bharat mata ki jai' setup the perfect tempo for us to start the run. A few stretches and a mandatory Zumba later, we chugged off.

The first two kilometers was a wide road with overwhelming greenery which slowly cleared towards a bridge to fort kochi island. As we moved forward, we could see buildings from the past, of the dutch, a Jewish street, a jetty point and as the winding streets slowed down, the rhythmic drum beats made sure the body kept moving as we reached the scenic fort kochi and yayyy, the half of the half marathon. Amid encouraging cheers, claps, lime, orange, salt and energizers, albeit a slow tempo, I kept going steadily. As we reached the last leg, the last few kilometers, we merged into the family run groups. The encouraging crowd from all walks of lives, overcoming their problems and running together.
A little girl at the finish congratulated and gave the finisher medal.

As we walked back out of the place, loud cheers from the army echoed in our ears:
"We will not stop,
Until we reach the top"
Thanks soles of Cochin for the great organization.
